Like I said, I was really really skeptical about this product. TONS of what I had read about it seemed to be pure hype.

• One Dub turbo review called it “The swiss army knife of hip-hop production”
• Another, “DUB Turbo, THE WHOOP-ASS WONDER”?
• Finally I found a DUB Turbo review which called it the only “BROADCAST QUALITY” hip hop production suite…

Fine, but what does all of that really mean?

To be totally honest, the hype around DUB Turbo actually kept me from buying the damn thing. In fact, the reason I actually ended up buying it was totally by accident, here’s a quick story about why I decided to buy Dub Turbo (as well as where I found some discounted pricing):

OK, Storytime…


I was struggling to get some beats together, I had a vocal studio session looming in the future and I was running behind… Way behind.


Panic started to set in. You see, I actually HAVE access to a few expensive drum machines, keyboards, computer programs etc. My problem was that I couldn’t get all of my “pro” gear to sync up with my computer and (worst of all) some of the stuff that I thought was “done” sounded horrible.


Normally I consider myself a pretty calm individual but this was causing me panic attacks. I couldn’t sleep, which made matters worse… I ended up getting bronchitis and couldn’t work at all for a few days. The studio session was a mere 2 days away and I had virtually NOTHING.


I knew I needed help. My friend (who wishes to remain anonymous) has been making great beats for a few years now, a few papers and a national magazine had recently picked up on him and he is now making a good name for himself in the industry (not to mention some good $$ and a very cute girlfriend, funny how that works eh?). When I called him he had just finished a big project and was chillin, he also said wanted to show me his new “super secret” toy.


I walk into his studio (filled with basically all of the gear you have EVER heard of) and there he is, punching out a beat ON HIS COMPUTER KEYBOARD!!! When he was done, he spun around and I could see what his new “Super secret” was… None other than DubTurbo.


We both sat down and quickly got to work. I really couldn’t believe how easy this thing was to work. In the time it would have taken setup a session on other expensive software we were already done with one song and on our way to the other. The company says that it will be addictive but I had NO IDEA what I was in for. I have been turning down invites to go out, left and right so that I could stay home (with my favorite beverages) and hammer out beats. Sometimes these sessions go on until the sun comes up. In fact, I realized the other day that I have actually saved a ton of money from not going out nearly as much as I used to. Further, I have been much more productive, working on my career and making great beats…

Ok, so what exactly does DUB Turbo do so well…

1) Puts you in a league with the pros - They call this “Broadcast Quality” you should just think of this as “Professional Quality”. People who have been making music for any amount of time know that a 44.1K Wave file beats the hell out of a .mp3 file. Why? It is simply higher quality, no data compression, there is simply MORE music to be heard. That’s why when you hear a professional mix, the kick drum “pops” so hard that it almost knocks you over. Compare this to what you get with the .mp3 version… There’s less depth, it’s like a 3D movie versus a cartoon.

If you are trying to make and sell professional beats, you need to be dealing with the industry standard for sound quality. DubTurbo offers that.



2) Ability to create full and complex songs - With the sequencer that is included here in DUBTurbo, you can actually craft a full song, not just a few seconds that need to be repeated over and over.

If you are trying to compete with the big boys and be taken seriously your beats need a level of sophistication that you can’t achieve with a just a 30 second sample played over and over.

You are going need to have an intro section that is different than the main section, you are going to have a hook section with either a syth melody or a sample of some kind, you are going to have to have a break down section that keeps people’s interest, you are going to have to have a “vamp” section where the hook is repeated and momentum is built and you are going to have to have an ending or “outro”.

You simply cannot do all of that with a looper, but with Dub Turbo, you have the functionality to actually compose a whole song around your artists vocals.

3) Beat Machine - The beat machine here is just plain SICK. Everybody knows that this is the “Make it or Break it” component for any hip hop production suite. DUB Turbo’s beat machine excels in all of the important areas. I consider these to be flexibility, ease of use and amount of features.

Flexibility - DUB Turbo’s beat machine is very very flexible. It’s not at all like those other clunky beat makers that won’t allow you to create the beat that is in your head. My experience with Dub turbo’s beat maker is not only will it allow you to get the beats out that you have humming to yourself, it can actually make them better. This leads me to my second point…

Easy to use - Creating music is hard enough on it’s own without cumbersome and hard to use interfaces getting in the way. This beat machine stays out of your way while you are creating. It allows for a very smooth transfer from your brain to your speakers.

The ability to bang out beats on your keyboard is totally incredible. In the past this took some pretty intensive programing or gear that was way more expensive. I have got to say that the ability to simply sit down and start pounding out the beat you are hearing is one of the greatest studio experiences I’ve ever had. It also makes working with very picky artists a snap. Just have the artist sing the part the way that want it and perform it on the keyboard the exact same way.

TIP: Often times, if I am having trouble getting the part exactly right, I will slow the tempo down so that I can focus on getting the timing JUST exactly right. When I have it perfect, I will speed the tempo back up to regular speed and WHAM… Perfection!

Tons of Features / Very Well Organized - When you first open dubturbo review exactly how well the beat machine is put together. Since we are all accustomed to the ways many different beat machines look and operate, it is obvious from your first glance that Dub turbo’s beat maker is different. It is much more in line with Web 2.0 design.

4) 4 Octave Keyboard - While growing up and in school I played a ton of piano and I accredit this for my ability to come up with interesting hooks. You can understand that the tiny, mini-keyboards that come standard with most hip hop software can cause endless frustration. Especially when you are working on a melody that sweeps from high notes to low notes. Dub Turbo ’s 4 octave keyboard solves all of that and is again, easy to use.

The only thing that we haven’t talked about are the tutorials that will actually help you to sell your beats. Let’s face it, the only way for your beats to change the world is if someone else (aka many other people) get to hear them.
