On October 26, 2010, Rachel Ries became the first rock artist to win the 3Arts Chicago Artist Award. Perhaps best known for her intimate alt-country performances at clubs like The Hideout Inn, Rachel has also been interviewed by Bob Edwards, released a record on Ani Difranco’s Righteous Babe Records, toured extensively around the country and been featured multiple times on Chicago Public Radio’s 848.

To celebrate this award and commemorate her departure to NYC, Rachel has decided to re-release her most recent record “Without A Bird” for free download on Chicago netlabel, RockProper.com. “Without A Bird” includes 10 songs that describe the journey of a woman from the county navigating the highs and lows of a life in Chicago. She describes the themes of the record as “relationships, the land, the tug and pull, the living in the city and the longing for the country”.

Ries describes herself as a shy person who first learned to communicate through song. “Singing was the way I could speak and tell a story,” she says in a recent interview. “It might sound a little bit callous, but if people come up to me after seeing me play and say I made them cry, I feel really happy.”

Since the original release of this record in 2007, Rachel has been applying her music to theatre and film, touring with Anaïs Mitchell and learning to play the drums.
